Is the holiday pressure building? Don’t be a grinch. Simple tips to hit the reset button and recalibrate yourself.

Is the holiday pressure building? Don’t be a grinch. Simple tips to hit the reset button and recalibrate yourself.

The holidays are typically filled with a plethora of very merry and extravagant gatherings, and we are right in the middle of it all. The overloading of family and friends can lead to frustrations along with the overloading of food creating a frustrated and compromised digestive system. I value spending time with family and friends however we are all unique and have a personal limit for stimulation, when we identify these limits and use them as guidelines it is easier to stay in our zone of connection. So how do we manage this jolly time of year and stay connected with loved ones without sacrificing our personal sanity and wellbeing?

I like to view it from a very simple perspective, have you ever had your computer or device start acting funky and find out all that needed to be done was to restart it? Its funny how such an easy and simple thing can change the way our devices perform and bring them back to optimal functioning. But what about our body and our mind? Could we have too many programs running and still be stuck on how the conversation at dinner went the other night? I believe so, which is why its a healthy practice to reset and recalibrate our orientation daily.

Based on my own experience I am a strong believer of taking time outs throughout the day, even if its for a moment I will take a few deep breaths to regain presence of where I am and what is really going on. This is true for me especially during gatherings where I may unintentionally be involved in two or three different conversations at the same time. This practice allows me to reconnect and reenter my body during the times when I recognize I am losing my focus or begin to enter frustration.

No one wants to be the grinch at the party or the one blaming their internal misery on someone or something else and time outs help alleviate this pressure building up inside before we hit the panic button and start causing trouble. If you feel this internal pressure cooker ready to explode give yourself the permission to take breather or a walk outside, it might just save you from the very thing you don’t want to happen.

Remember to be kind to yourself and not to over schedule, give plenty of time to relax, reflect and let go of what is not needed in your personal internal hard drive. Remember that you can be the catalyst for creating a more loving and connected gathering and it all begins with how we enter each moment.

3 health benefits of drinking warm water.

3 health benefits of drinking warm water.

Actions tend to create momentum in one of two directions, towards aligning ourself to a more easeful experience or towards disharmony. I can say at this time, for most of my life I was on the path of disharmony, with no clear goal to strive to, with no desired state of physical, mental, emotional or spiritual health to experience.  I was on the path of just trying to get through the day with as little conflict as possible. So what does this have to do with drinking warm water?

Everything!!

As we transition into the cooler months it doesn’t mean you can’t be warm and fuzzy inside and often enough its these simplest action steps which make that said warm feeling happen. Think of wool socks and how comforting they are. Action step, put on a pair of wool socks. Want to feel warm and comfortable inside? Action step, drink warm liquids and eat warming foods. This comfort can relax the nervous system, which is a major controller of how well our digestion is functioning, which over time this comfort carries the potential for transformational results.

Over time I have adopted a very simple morning routine which a couple of the practices repeat throughout the day. This is a common practice in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, and sure enough, it’s the simplest of them all that for me have been the most life changing!

The most basic practices from these ancient traditions of promoting health and longevity is through improving digestion, warming up the body and keeping the energy flowing. Think of ice, its stagnant, dense, rigid and well, cold. This alone should shine some light on the adverse affects of drinking ice water. Now contrast this to warm water. It doesn’t contain any of the preceding descriptors. Basic enough?

So onto the ideas and application behind this practice.

So what do you do? Drink warm water first thing in the morning in place of cold or room temp water. It’s best not to overthink it because it is this simple. Ideally the water should not be too hot to drink in a quick manner. You are not making tea so long before it becomes “tea hot” it is ready. Do Not burn yourself! It’s not worth it and it’s not pleasant first thing in the morning to scorch your taste buds and throat.

What you get from drinking this is a warming sensation throughout your entire body that’s very comforting. This practice is very underestimated with the power of flushing out subtle and gross stagnation in your systems. Of course it’s hydrating and possibly more importantly it stimulates peristalsis, yes pooping, the typically underachieved elimination process ridding your body from yesterday’s digested food hanging out inside you.

Simplicity at its best, choose warming liquids and foods to consume during these chilling months. I invite you to try it out. Begin to notice the most basic functions in your body improve and becoming more consistent. Remember the warmth you can create from the inside out is this easy when the proper steps are taken to support your body.

So here are 3 health benefits from drinking warm water.

  1. Helps flush water soluble toxins first thing in the morning.
  2. Promotes bowel movement to start the day lighter and clear.
  3. Helps stimulate and awaken the digestive fire in your belly

Bonus health benefit!

The warm glass feels really nice in your hands first thing in the morning.

Enjoy the path to creating a more easeful experience, creating more harmony within and exuding that harmony to others.

Choose your habits wisely!

Cosmic Download, riding the waves of intuitive insights.

Cosmic Download, riding the waves of intuitive insights.

When we attune ourselves to the rhythms of our environment it becomes easier to facilitate deep listening. Deep listening itself is a skill we can acquire by practicing again and again, and as we practice it becomes easier to notice the influences upon us and how we can apply them in a way to facilitate our path.

Ride the waves of intuitive insights.

The skill of listening is becoming more and more of a commodity in our culture, at least to me it is as I notice just how out of tune people are within social interactions by evacuating the interaction through means of a device searching for something that is rarely found outside of the present moment and by consistently turning the conversation back to themselves. Just as its a challenge to truly listen to someone who just needs to be heard our intuition is calling on us to listen deeply more often than we think.

Everything that we perceive here in nature is pulsating with these insights for us, but only if we take the time to listen to them.

Our breath comes in and it goes out, the tide comes in and goes out. The cycles are a part of the natural rhythm and we are inherently integrated within, that is until we perceive ourselves as separate from, above or below the rhythms. Surfing for me is an instant reality check for this, as entering the water is an instant attunement to the bigger picture and the pulsating nature of our environment. When the swell is on the rise the energy shifts and becomes much more intense than when the swell is low, just as surfing has a skill level involved so does the practice of internal listening aka meditating.

If we intentionally choose to ride the swells of creative impulses, we facilitate our creativity to bloom. If we choose to ride the waves of our intuitive impulses, our choices become more clear as to where they will guide us.

As we continually come into this state of listening whether its to a friend, a stranger, a family member or spouse, we hone a valuable skill sharpening our attention span. This skill gradually builds momentum and before you know it just like learning a new language you have the capacity to listen deeply and hear the messages coming through you in a new way you haven’t heard or felt before. The momentum from consistently tapping into our intuition and acting on what we truly hear is the practice.

Acknowledge the rise and fall of the pulses and surges of inspiration coming through you! Feel your heart beating, pumping blood through our entire body and reflect this to the larger picture of where we really are in space and time. On a tiny speck of dust, drifting around a star, floating through space that no one can explain. Namaste!

Please share this with anyone who you feel may enjoy or benefit from this!

How yoga will show you the way home.

How yoga will show you the way home.

Being in your body is being at home in nature

If you have recetly attended any of my yoga classes, you have noticed the conversation I have been starting about the rhythms, pulsations, our bodies and using the practice as a way of reconnecting. Whatever your view-point is, it’s a beneficial shift to see it as a collaborative experience we have with our bodies. Our bodies are essentially our feedback system for what we choose to participate in daily, from our food choices, where we spend our time and what we put our focus on.

Through different stages in our yoga practice we direct our senses inward and explore what we begin to notice. At first we may just notice muscle fatigue from the yoga postures and the accompanying sensation of physical movement, but over time we may begin to notice specific patterns or behaviors that no longer suit our desired state physically or mentally. From this stage when we shift gears into this perspective of bodily collaboration we reflect on how our choices are affecting us and how we feel.

Today people expect or hope for their health to be achieved in a pill form, that magically the doctor or nutritionist will fix us with a special concoction to make everything better or that just talking to the psychiatrist will alleviate the stress and the changes will occur, but this approach doesn’t address and give practical strategies for creating new and lasting lifestyle and behavior changes. The modern medical approach has essentially been zooming in on the what is happening and finding a way to alleviate the symptom or discomfort, this approach does have its place but it typically doesn’t address the reason such symptoms are arising or offer a strategy to change.

Where in your life is the over indulging in a substance or action costing you and how much?  Maybe it’s not committing to saving a said amount for a much-needed vacation or retreat. Maybe the irresponsible spending is building frustration in your partner and an emotional volcano is building up pressure to erupt at any moment.

Over time, how much are you spending on the extra stress induced food cravings, alcohol, shopping for another pair of shoes or pants that you know you don’t need. How much money is this costing you per year along with how much is this taxing your energy reserves and mental capacity? What’s the point and why are we habitually drawn to do these things when triggered in a stressful situation or overrun with overwhelm.

Zooming out to the larger perspective is one of the practices for entering the collaborative model and through relating to this idea of rhythms and cycles we can clearly see where there are areas of strength, integrity and imbalances. It’s through adopting this perspective of  the bigger picture and entering collaboration, when attuned to the rhythms of the day that we take the approach of connectivity. From the circadian cycles to the seasonal rhythms we have the waves of different qualities we can ride attuning us creating more of a balanced way of living and experiencing life.

Understanding how much money the choices being made are costing financially is a huge eye opener, investing in yourself and on your own journey to feeling awesome is in my opinion the best way to create an enjoyable life.

Because it’s through making decisions ahead of time while willpower and motivation are high that highlights the choices which are in alignment with what you are needing and desiring to change.

3 tips for the seasonal transition.

3 tips for the seasonal transition.

It’s  that time of year again to take a step back and enjoy reflecting on the summer!

How often do you find yourself moving nonstop, leaving behind your basic needs for self care, self reflection and self nourishment?

Its easy to forget how important it is to take break, not only from the longer days, but the activities, over stimulating adventures and also the complex ways of eating which most of us tend to indulge in.

Now is the time to integrate all the experiences from the summer and begin the shift towards deeper self nourishment! This can be done gradually and the steps may be small. The question is…

Will you give yourself permission to take a dive into understanding your deeper needs?

It doesn’t take long. Committing to the following practices for one week will give you the much deserved time to sit back, relax, enjoy the change of the season and gain a deeper insight for your personal needs.

  • Giving your digestion a break is commonly overlooked and holds . Choosing to eat a mono diet or eating simple food like kitchari will assist you through this process. Allowing the energy typically used for digestion to be redirected and help facilitate the next two practices.

  • Taking the time to sit in silence and in a state of reflection. This will create the internal space to integrate the activities you participated in this summer, evaluate where you spend your energy, release what you no longer need and will help make room for the new potentials.

  • Keep a consistent yoga / movement practice that suits your daily needs. Practicing daily, even if it’s for ten or twenty minutes will bring you back into your body. Coming back to the body allows for deeper listening, sensing what we really need to stay nourished and functioning optimally.

As the seasons evolve and the energy of the senses are redirected from the dense, external to the subtler internal, we tap into a powerful time for reflecting on what you need to create and what you truly need to bring into your life.

On a foundational level adopting these practices will create a positive momentum to bring into the approaching holiday season, setting yourself up for a more easeful experience to enjoy the valuable time with loved ones.

Summer Harvest

Summer Harvest

The Hatch Chile !!!

This unique chile may have a very short window of harvesting starting in August and finishing late September and its worth it.

There is quite some controversy about retailers and distributors naming other varieties “Hatch” due to the exclusivity of the crop, so if you find them in the markets outside of the season, they are most likely imposters.

On a health note, some of the compounds in chiles have been studied about the interesting responses to our bodies and our minds.

Outside of being tasty, chiles have been used for a variety of things ranging from toothaches to shark repellent.

Although I don’t think its a good method for shark repellent, these chiles do taste great and do offer a flavor slightly different from other chiles.

So here is a recipe for some hot sauce I cooked up the other day.

Enjoy!

Ingredients

Procedure

  1. Roast the chiles in on oven or on a grill until blistered
  2. Cool the chiles, peel off the blistered skin and chop into large pieces
  3. In a small pot on medium heat sweat onion and garlic in the coconut oil just until they begin to caramelize
  4. Add the chiles, spices, vinegar, and water
  5. Bring to a simmer, lower the heat and cook for 10 minutes
  6. Set aside and allow to cool
  7. When cooled add to your blender the chiles, salt and honey, blend until smooth
  8. Adjust seasoning and store in a sealed jar in the refrigerator
