How yoga will show you the way home.

How yoga will show you the way home.

Being in your body is being at home in nature

If you have recetly attended any of my yoga classes, you have noticed the conversation I have been starting about the rhythms, pulsations, our bodies and using the practice as a way of reconnecting. Whatever your view-point is, it’s a beneficial shift to see it as a collaborative experience we have with our bodies. Our bodies are essentially our feedback system for what we choose to participate in daily, from our food choices, where we spend our time and what we put our focus on.

Through different stages in our yoga practice we direct our senses inward and explore what we begin to notice. At first we may just notice muscle fatigue from the yoga postures and the accompanying sensation of physical movement, but over time we may begin to notice specific patterns or behaviors that no longer suit our desired state physically or mentally. From this stage when we shift gears into this perspective of bodily collaboration we reflect on how our choices are affecting us and how we feel.

Today people expect or hope for their health to be achieved in a pill form, that magically the doctor or nutritionist will fix us with a special concoction to make everything better or that just talking to the psychiatrist will alleviate the stress and the changes will occur, but this approach doesn’t address and give practical strategies for creating new and lasting lifestyle and behavior changes. The modern medical approach has essentially been zooming in on the what is happening and finding a way to alleviate the symptom or discomfort, this approach does have its place but it typically doesn’t address the reason such symptoms are arising or offer a strategy to change.

Where in your life is the over indulging in a substance or action costing you and how much?  Maybe it’s not committing to saving a said amount for a much-needed vacation or retreat. Maybe the irresponsible spending is building frustration in your partner and an emotional volcano is building up pressure to erupt at any moment.

Over time, how much are you spending on the extra stress induced food cravings, alcohol, shopping for another pair of shoes or pants that you know you don’t need. How much money is this costing you per year along with how much is this taxing your energy reserves and mental capacity? What’s the point and why are we habitually drawn to do these things when triggered in a stressful situation or overrun with overwhelm.

Zooming out to the larger perspective is one of the practices for entering the collaborative model and through relating to this idea of rhythms and cycles we can clearly see where there are areas of strength, integrity and imbalances. It’s through adopting this perspective of  the bigger picture and entering collaboration, when attuned to the rhythms of the day that we take the approach of connectivity. From the circadian cycles to the seasonal rhythms we have the waves of different qualities we can ride attuning us creating more of a balanced way of living and experiencing life.

Understanding how much money the choices being made are costing financially is a huge eye opener, investing in yourself and on your own journey to feeling awesome is in my opinion the best way to create an enjoyable life.

Because it’s through making decisions ahead of time while willpower and motivation are high that highlights the choices which are in alignment with what you are needing and desiring to change.

3 tips for the seasonal transition.

3 tips for the seasonal transition.

It’s  that time of year again to take a step back and enjoy reflecting on the summer!

How often do you find yourself moving nonstop, leaving behind your basic needs for self care, self reflection and self nourishment?

Its easy to forget how important it is to take break, not only from the longer days, but the activities, over stimulating adventures and also the complex ways of eating which most of us tend to indulge in.

Now is the time to integrate all the experiences from the summer and begin the shift towards deeper self nourishment! This can be done gradually and the steps may be small. The question is…

Will you give yourself permission to take a dive into understanding your deeper needs?

It doesn’t take long. Committing to the following practices for one week will give you the much deserved time to sit back, relax, enjoy the change of the season and gain a deeper insight for your personal needs.

  • Giving your digestion a break is commonly overlooked and holds . Choosing to eat a mono diet or eating simple food like kitchari will assist you through this process. Allowing the energy typically used for digestion to be redirected and help facilitate the next two practices.

  • Taking the time to sit in silence and in a state of reflection. This will create the internal space to integrate the activities you participated in this summer, evaluate where you spend your energy, release what you no longer need and will help make room for the new potentials.

  • Keep a consistent yoga / movement practice that suits your daily needs. Practicing daily, even if it’s for ten or twenty minutes will bring you back into your body. Coming back to the body allows for deeper listening, sensing what we really need to stay nourished and functioning optimally.

As the seasons evolve and the energy of the senses are redirected from the dense, external to the subtler internal, we tap into a powerful time for reflecting on what you need to create and what you truly need to bring into your life.

On a foundational level adopting these practices will create a positive momentum to bring into the approaching holiday season, setting yourself up for a more easeful experience to enjoy the valuable time with loved ones.

Are you heeding your call?

Are you heeding your call?

Listen, what do you hear? What do you feel? Listen deeper, or maybe let go and allow it to come through.

If your life was to be laid out like the story in a book, could you see it breaking up into chapters? Would you see the chapters creating “the hero’s journey” or maybe some other narrative archetype?

I have come across many references to this analogy and it seems to resonate with me, especially when thinking about friends and individuals entering the story at some point and then heading in another direction later on in book.

Things come and go with the tide, its always moving and evolving while still maintaining its truth.

The challenges faced in the story tend to be the start of a new path, they tend to have a deeper meaning and message later on, just as when we reflect on the challenges in our life its often hard to see the bigger picture or lessons learned until after we have moved past, let go and integrated the experience.

Day to day we may not notice anything different but as the chapters progress we may see how different we have become over time. Reflecting on the significance of each choice and how it has shaped who we are today.

“our lives are a sum total of the choices we have made”

Dr. Wayne Dyer

The chapters in my life seem to be unfolding and becoming more and more interesting. Most of what I have known to identify myself with has been evolving into something greater than I still can imagine, something beyond me and for a bigger purpose. Not coming from a self promoting place or even entitlement, I know I’m not alone in this understanding and knowing that we are here to facilitate a deeply felt shift in way we live on this planet.

The old ways of living through greed, corruption and entitlement are fading out quickly and it takes an openness to welcome the new collaborative way evolving and living together.

This greater message coming through us is here to help others into the new way, showing and leading others by example while in the roll of the facilitator, the teacher and the mentor.

Heed the call to your own adventure, cross the threshold and bathe in the elixir of transformation.

It comes back to a state of remembering the truth within us, letting go of the need for outside validation of who or what others see us to be. Remembering this truth allows us to be in control of our own happiness, finding fulfillment in serving a larger purpose.

In the end, there may be nothing more powerful than to be aware of the choices we have made and the path we are on, writing the story and building our life with the creator mindset.

Summer Harvest

Summer Harvest

The Hatch Chile !!!

This unique chile may have a very short window of harvesting starting in August and finishing late September and its worth it.

There is quite some controversy about retailers and distributors naming other varieties “Hatch” due to the exclusivity of the crop, so if you find them in the markets outside of the season, they are most likely imposters.

On a health note, some of the compounds in chiles have been studied about the interesting responses to our bodies and our minds.

Outside of being tasty, chiles have been used for a variety of things ranging from toothaches to shark repellent.

Although I don’t think its a good method for shark repellent, these chiles do taste great and do offer a flavor slightly different from other chiles.

So here is a recipe for some hot sauce I cooked up the other day.

Enjoy!

Ingredients

Procedure

  1. Roast the chiles in on oven or on a grill until blistered
  2. Cool the chiles, peel off the blistered skin and chop into large pieces
  3. In a small pot on medium heat sweat onion and garlic in the coconut oil just until they begin to caramelize
  4. Add the chiles, spices, vinegar, and water
  5. Bring to a simmer, lower the heat and cook for 10 minutes
  6. Set aside and allow to cool
  7. When cooled add to your blender the chiles, salt and honey, blend until smooth
  8. Adjust seasoning and store in a sealed jar in the refrigerator

What Yoga May Show You About Yourself

What Yoga May Show You About Yourself

“Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self.”

Its only been a couple years since I began teaching yoga but it feels like a lifetime away that I completed my initial training. I distinctively remember in my training the fear, doubt, lack of confidence and many other challenges which came up for me to work through but also a deeper pull to do this even though I didn’t know why.

I saw how much attention to detail and focus it takes to guide students through a well structured class leaving them with a pleasant experience and noticed right away the difference between teaching people who are new to the practice with little to no experience versus the well seasoned practitioner.

The best teachers will tell where to look but not what to find.

I think I had a sense in my field that I wanted to teach the experienced yogi however lately I have been given the opposite. New opportunities are consistently given to me now and most of which involve students brand new to the practice. In the past month I have had twenty first-time practitioners show up in my classes and I couldn’t be happier about it.

Your throat gives your heart a voice.

There is so much more to yoga than the elaborate postures everyone sees on the internet and other media outlets and I feel so grateful to have the opportunity to breakdown the different elements of the practice. Giving context to the practice and how its used as a set of tools rather than jumping right into the postures with no understanding of why we are here participating.

The consciousness you hold creates the life you experience.

Still every day is a new day to work through the beliefs we may have about ourselves keeping us confined in a state of comfort, preventing us from being vulnerable and experiencing humility.

Just like exercise strengthens muscles we can broaden our threshold of comfort and invite the new challenges, strengthening our sense of confidence while still maintaining a balance of humility and gratitude. Its a constant adaptation to the direction we are being pulled and the gifts we are willing to share, a perfect blend of surrender, consistency and authenticity.

I wouldn’t want it any other way.

WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO EAT PLANTS?

Unless you are living in a climate where plants don’t grow which is most likely not somewhere you would want to live anyways, they should be the foundation of any healthy diet.

Of course there is seasonality to specific plants and their availability which is the beauty behind including variety and eating local. However, today we have too many labels and restrictions of how one may or may not eat and its easy to loose focus of the simplicity of food and the purpose of it.

If its not understood fully then take it in now, what we eat ultimately becomes us.

Low quality food means low functioning cells and higher quality food gives the cells the information needed to hopefully do what they are meant to do. In this divine relationship the nutrients we consume are the building blocks of our physical bodies and inform the cells to perform certain functions. I am not a scientist or doctor but to me this is what signifies the connection from our inner environment to our outer environment and our current health.

Polyphenols are probably the most interesting component to plants which supply us with a source of energy efficiency. The antioxidant properties of  polyphenols may influence many things from the efficiency of our metabolism and production of energy to the rate of which our cells age.

Besides the nutrients found in plants we have a dense accumulation of vibrant energy where in Ayurveda, we call it prana.

Prana is understood as the life force energy flowing in and all around us and everything alive needs prana for survival. Plants take in this energy from the sun along with nutrients from the earth and end up creating a more condensed form of prana which directly inform our cells. Just remember freshness still matters, the shriveled discolored veggies in the back of the refrigerator will not have the same intensity of prana as the fresh and vibrantly colored produce.

Fiber is definitely lacking in the standard American diet and is essential for the food to move through the digestive system efficiently as well as providing food for the bacteria in the gut. Without proper fiber intake comes a slow internal destruction and a whole list of health issues.

Its wild to see people filling their gas tanks with premium grade fuel and then eating low quality food.

I see it as a lack of value for our bodies along with the environment, after all, we are inherently part of this environment and there is no way around it. Its time we accept this relationship we have with our inner and outer environment and focus on this amazing influence plant foods may have on our body, when we focus on quality, diversity and freshness of the food we eat we start to upgrade our life.

Rise and Shine

There are many reasons to wake up and get going in the morning so this is a focus on the connection to the unseen (but deeply felt) layers of ourselves and the reasons for awakening with intention. Right away if you have not read the previous two blogs on this adventure into the lifestyle habits from Ayurveda then start here with Habits for Vibrant Health and then Habits for Vibrant Health 2 as these practices are all interconnected and introduced in an intentional order.

So from the previous two posts we now know the important connection of eating a lighter and earlier dinner to reach deeper states of sleep so we can wake in the morning feeling rested and ready to shine. The morning is a very influential time with a quality containing many potentials for the direction of the day, this idea leads to the power of waking up with an intention or miracle mindset!

Have you noticed the difference of how you feel later in the day from when waking up and directly jumping into a reaction mode rather than taking the time to enjoy the intricate details and subtle qualities the morning contains? Just as we begin to wake up our mind is coming back from dream land and in an expanded state, this state when we use it for our benefit is fertile ground for planting new intentions and inviting new perspectives. Starting the day with this template sets the trajectory and opens the perspective to the larger happenings of the world around us. But this is just one of the many pieces to this puzzle.

So we have a variety of channels flowing in the body ranging from the subtle at the top of the body to the gross at the lower end of the body. The morning is a time when the energy is already at the top, especially upon waking and is needed to move in a downward and grounding way. Doing this creates a stronger foundation and brings us deeper into our body so we can face the days challenges and respond to those challenges with more integrity.

Movement in the morning should be a non-negotiable for everybody since it opens up the body stimulating the channels from the subtle to the gross. Movement combined with deeper breathing opens up specific channels, clears the mind making room to create a brand new experience and brings in the potential for how we want to experience the day. When these channels are clear it becomes easier to hit the rest button, easier to let go of yesterdays challenges and easier to invite the day with a clear mind and clear body.

The food we ate yesterday affects us on many levels beyond just the physical and cellular structure of our body. From how it was prepared to our mental and emotional state while eating, these subtle details affect how we feel which is just one part of why we need to fully eliminate yesterdays food clearing the larger channels making room for the subtler channels and the new days’ experiences.

As I dove deeper into these habits I began to identify what was preventing me from growing into my next phase, preventing me from living my values and appreciating how good it feels to thrive. For myself, starting the day in a constructive way comes down to a few easy steps I have adopted and integrated to create a strategic routine. I start with the usual oral hygiene, drinking water and without hesitation I start moving. Whether its jumping jacks, sun salutations or foam rolling I open up the body with movement and intentional breathing.  I find it much easier to sit, listen and focus on an intention for the day and to invite the miracle mindset after moving and getting the channels flowing.
