When you stop and look at your daily routines what do you notice? From the very first thing you do upon waking up every morning, to the last task you check off before closing your eyes for the night, there are habits and patterns you are following every day which are leading you in a direction. Just think for a moment and invite in this question. Which direction do I want to be heading in and are my current habits in alignment with this direction?
Your habits are a reflection of your current identity
Just this question alone can be so profound if you tend to expend your energy in one or more areas. Such as if you are habitually spending your entire energy bank account at work only loose steam and not have anything left to give and share when it comes to relationships and family. This is one I personally noticed several years back when I began to explore this topic and with a conscious effort I started to shift. I began this shift just as I continue to practice today with small changes and refinement techniques. So back to the question, in what direction do you desire to be headed? This could be in a direction towards a specific goal, a desired outcome or even a state of experiencing or feeling. Moreover beginning to accept that these habits are the framework for our daily experiences allows us to take control of our lives trajectory.
Habits are simply automated routines.
If the cultural norm today is to feel busy, tired, overwhelmed or even sick and depleted, then that makes the conscious choice to feel at ease throughout the day a counter culture path. This path is very different and goes against most of what is being served to us through the majority of media and advertising, making it a bit challenging and potentially draining of our will power if we aren’t clear on our personal and relational values. My intention here is to show the importance of creating clarity on what it is that you stand for, what it is that you value as an individual and what you value as a collaborator on this planet.
How do you feel in the morning? Midday? Evening?
These daily habits and lifestyle choices are what set the pace for how we age and the degree of comfort we experience through our lives. While every choice does matter, it is also another opportunity to realign in the direction you want to be headed. Our habits either bring us into balance, or the opposite which is why a creating conscious routine aligned with a desired state or outcome is so powerful. So does choosing this perspective gives us ultimate control of how in balance we are? There is only one way to know for yourself. Invite the explorers mindset and try to tweak your routine until it fits your needs.
While traveling along the growth path its easy to get caught in the reigns of perfection, so I invite you to drop it completely and be open to the infinite possibilities and opportunities for learning through the choices made. We must allow ourselves to be human and to live freely but with a compassionate understanding of our reason we integrate our choices and free ourselves from being overly critical.
Think small shifts over time.
Looking at how we live our lives, it’s not just about having good habits. When we live purposefully and with intention, the habits we choose can give us leverage. That is more power and more momentum to align ourselves to the next level in our personal evolution and closer to who we desire to become.
